What is Big Data and How Does Big Data Work?

Big Data, one of today's popular concepts, was first introduced in the field of astronomy and genetics, and with the introduction of the internet into our lives, it has gained a different dimension and has become a resource that we have a share in its growth without realizing it. Before looking at the definition of big data, we need to look at the equivalent of the data in the literature. Data refers to a general term derived from research, observations, internet, social media, and sensors.

Big data; It is the form of data that is analyzed and classified, transformed into meaningful and processable form.

When interactions in constantly used social media accounts, search engines and traces left behind when searched, movements made with bank accounts, blogs, mails, sensors and individual users' interactions with the internet are brought together, a huge data stack is formed. We can evaluate big data as a treasure that feeds from this stack and presents meaningful and actionable information to the user.

Big data has adopted the principle of making the available data the most useful, bringing a new perspective to the opinions of businesses and institutions about their customers, and opening new channels. At this point, in order to reach the most useful information, it is necessary to act with the principles of big data and to reveal the simplest and most processable form of the data. Many data points are compared, the relationships of the data with each other are revealed, and these relationships enable us to learn and therefore make smarter decisions. This is commonly done by a process involving building models based on the data collected, and then the simulations are run. It is monitored how the results are affected by changing the location of the data points each time.

With the advancement of the age, the concept now called data started to express a very complex structure. Data now includes everything from databases to photos, videos to audio recordings, written text and sensor data. Businesses also have to follow technology closely and invest in big data under their own structures to solve all this complexity. They should divide the data into certain segments and determine their strategies with customer profile analysis.

It does not seem possible to limit the usage area of big data, which has a place in every field. Many individuals and organizations use big data analysis, including vendors who want to monitor consumer behavior, new companies that want to create creative trends, researchers or entrepreneurs trying to explain the current situation. Institutions and organizations using big data see the positive contributions of this technology in a short time. According to studies, companies using big data; They earned 50% more earnings, were 41% effective in market work, decreased advertising spending by 37%, and were more successful in social media use with as high as 37%.

Data started to greatly affect and change our world and lifestyle. As such, the correct use of this data benefits both society and commercial organizations. Under today's conditions, considering the benefits and gains it will bring when data is processed correctly, we will undoubtedly encounter very positive developments in the process that progresses with the developing technology.

  1. This is an insightful post. You extensively discussed the concept of Big data. It is true that companies who uses Big data earn more revenue and that they will certainly spend lesser on advertising. Truly, what I would like to add is the concept of programming advertising that allows advertisers to make use of improved targeting techniques by using software and tools that enable this. Also, software that provides advance tracking of adverts by providing higher level of analytics on the growth and effectiveness of adverts being run by the organization. With the above in mind, organizations can edge their competitors in any industry.

  3. Congratulations on a brilliant publication. Reading this article, we can realise the origin of data analytics. Nowadays, digital marketers are using helpful insights from Big Data to predict potential purchase habits and trends. Digital Marketers can analyse the data collected and track the consumer buying behaviour to know what the consumer is looking for, what channels consumers are using to obtain their goods. Are they using traditional channels? Are they into digital platforms? And when they are acquiring their products. Big data also provides essential pieces of information to companies when they target their audience and valuable understanding to choose the best platform to publish their products.

  4. Extremely insightful, specially for people who are absolutely unfamiliar with Big Data and its relevance. What's even more fascinating for me is the importance such technology as this being crucial in nearly most form of business. Keeping that mind, it's not impossible to predict the further rise in its popularity in future as the global reliance is inclining more and more towards digital platforms, leaving huge amounts of raw footprints absolutely ready to be analysed and then used to optimise and improve the products and services for a better and more noteworthy experiences for the users. Although, the questions of morality and ethical use of all this data always looms, and remains as an important aspect to be monitored closely by the authorities.
