Emerging Technologies: Augmented Reality (AR)

Using the object recognition feature of Augmented Reality (AR) devices, it is called superimposing of virtual objects on real images. To use this technology, you must have internet access in your environment and smart devices such as smart glasses, smartphones or tablets that will define the augmented reality. In addition, one of the applications defined on Augmented Reality must be installed on this device. After these conditions are fulfilled, when you define the image designed for Augmented Reality with the application on your device, your device detects the image and you encounter a new image.

It is seen that the augmented reality technology is based on military technology, just like many technologies. The emergence of this technology is HUD (Head Up Display) technology. This technology was started to be used on the HUD screens opposite the fighter jet pilots in the cockpit and with the glasses integrated into the helmets used by the soldiers. Some informative data like speed, temperature, altitude, coordinates, radar  were transmitted through these glasses or screens. HUD technology continues to be used in commercial aircraft, automotive industry and other areas.

What is the difference between virtual reality and augmented reality?

While in one of them there is a virtual world that is not real, in the other there are objects that are real. The whole experience you will experience in virtual reality is presented as a simulation, but in augmented reality it is integrated with real beings in an imaginary world. In other words, while augmented reality actually expresses a situation defined over the existing world, virtual reality is completely imaginary.

A specially prepared application is used in augmented reality and thus a completely different world is created in real time. Different equipment is not needed for the formation of this world; Headset or mobile device camera sensors are sufficient. However, virtual reality applications need equipment that covers the entire field of view and allows you to control what you hear. While virtual reality offers a completely different world, augmented reality transitions into different and deep worlds on the existing world.

What are the usage areas of augmented reality?

Augmented reality is now a technology that many companies consider and invest on. As the applications developed, the areas where it was used increased in the same way. Now, brands prefer to offer a more realistic experience to their customers with AR technology. We come across many experiences from posters to boards, billboards to animations designed with augmented technology. From social media applications to the field of medicine, we now encounter many areas. Thanks to the enhanced technology, the virtual world unites with real life and provides us with a completely different experience. Augmented reality is used in many areas and industries such as fashion, tourism, game industries, education, marketing, museums and art galleries, decoration, real estate sector and construction industry. Examples of these areas include Zara's AR application, Pokemon Go game, Google Arts and Culture's contents. With AR technology, which offers much more exciting experiences for many users and customers, projects that can be very effective can be implemented, especially in the pandemic period, when people cannot go to physical stores.

In summary, in our age where technology is more valuable every day, it is quite exciting and curious to offer people a new perception of reality. Augmented reality technology seems to facilitate us in many areas and change our world a lot.
